Mastering Potty Training: The K9 Training Institute Guide for Dog OwnersEnd the Mess, Start the Success: Discover How Effective Potty Training Techniques Can Transform Your Dog's Behavior and Strengthen Your Bond
Let’s face it:Owning a dog that struggles with potty training can feel like a constant cleanup mission in your own home. You feel overwhelmed by the messes. It can seem unmanageable. We know you might feel…

Worried your dog will continue to have accidents indoors…
Worried about the negative impact on your dog’s social behavior and ability to adapt to new environments if potty training isn’t resolved...
Frustrated because your dog doesn’t follow potty rules…
Sick of cleaning up messes and stains every day…
Tired of the persistent smell and constant cleaning…
Tired of wasting money on trainers that can’t seem to solve the problem…
To be honest, it's not just you.The consequences of not properly potty training your dog can be extremely costly, both from a financial AND an emotional point of view. It's also worth noting that the longer you postpone it, the worse it will get. In fact EVERY SINGLE DAY of letting your dog's potty accidents rule your life, reinforces those habits, and makes it harder to fix.The good news? After working with over 21,494 dog owners who took our TOTAL TRANSFORMATION MASTERCASS, we know there are a lot of ways to successfully potty train your dog.
SOLVING POTTY TRAINING PROBLEMS REQUIRES 3 THINGS:
(1) Understand your dog's potty schedule and signals
Keep a journal to track when your dog typically needs to go and what signs they show before going.(2) A consistent routine
Take your dog out at regular intervals, especially after meals, naps, and playtime. Consistently reward them for going potty outside.(3) Proper supervision and confinement
When you can't watch your dog, keep them confined to a crate or small area to prevent accidents. Gradually increase their freedom as they become more reliable. We also recommend learning the SIT and WATCH cues used by service dog trainers, as they are extremely powerful tools that make potty training your dog a lot easier. We teach both in our full Total Transformation Masterclass.
SOLVING POTTY TRAINING PROBLEMS DOES NOT REQUIRE:
• Spending thousands of $ on a professional trainer (except in extreme cases)
• Punishment of any kind, shock collars, etc.
• A degree in “dog psychology”
• Using dog behaviorists or service dog trainers (this can cost between $15k-$30k!). (Again, except in extreme cases).
OUR MOST RECOMMENDED TECHNIQUE TO TRY:
The 3 Step Process: Confine, Maintain, and ReinforceMethod: Consistently supervise your dog, maintain a regular potty break schedule, and reinforce appropriate elimination with positive experiences.
HOW TO DO IT:
1. Supervise your dog closely when they're indoors, especially after meals, naps, and playtime. Confine them to a small area when you can't actively supervise to prevent accidents.2. Maintain a consistent potty break routine, taking your dog to the same designated spot at regular intervals.3. As your dog starts to eliminate, calmly say "good potty" and reward them with praise and a treat immediately after they finish.Gradually increase the time between potty breaks as your dog learns to hold it longer.By following this process consistently and with positive reinforcement, you'll help your dog understand where and when it's appropriate to eliminate.
To learn more about the right way to use treats during training, and especially how to make sure your dog does not rely on them to behave well - check out our full Total Transformation Masterclass.
This process uses positive reinforcement to help your dog develop a clear understanding of appropriate elimination habits and a preference for going potty outdoors.
Pros of this method: Only requires 10-15 minutes per day to get results. To learn more about the 3 step process, check out our full Total Transformation Masterclass.
Have you tried this and other methods, and found that they're not working?
HERE’S WHAT YOU MIGHT BE DOING WRONG:
❌ DO NOT Use shock collars or aversive methods. Beyond the ethical considerations - research shows it’s just not as effective.❌ DON’T EVER PUNISH or SCOLD. This will make things worse.❌ Ideally, do not rely on treats - you might find yourself without them one day, and it will be the wrong day, or the wrong place, with the wrong people, to find out your dog was only behaving well when the treats are around! To learn more about the right way to use treats during training, and especially how to make sure your dog does not rely on them to behave well - check out our full Total Transformation Masterclass.❌ Ideally, do not rely ONLY on VOICE commands - Dogs don’t really understand English, despite memorizing some words. Dogs use body language to communicate with each other, and research shows it’s much more effective to use when training or using cues with a dog.The most effective way to train, and keep your dog happily obedient long term - is to learn to “speak dog” by learning their body language, and communicating through body language. We teach exactly how to do both in our full Total Transformation Masterclass.✅ QUICK TIP: Give your dog a job to do - Use the DOWN and WATCH cues like we teach in our Total Transformation Masterclass.
“Is this too hard for me to do it on my own?”
Well, there are two factors here: you - and your dog. For some people it’s harder, for some dogs it’s harder. If the technique in this guide was hard for you to understand or implement - you might want to check out our full Total Transformation Masterclass, where our team of experts and trainers show you step-by-step with videos how to train your dog on your own.
